The traditional Newari town of Dhulikhel is a popular retreat from the city within the Kathmandu Valley, and a great place from which to get views of the high Himalaya. The town is set at an altitude of 1550m and is less than two hour's drive from central Kathmandu, and just an hour from Bhaktapur. Dhulikhel is a bustling local centre, home to a branch of Kathmandu University and one of the area's best hospitals. It is a great place to observe local life, especially around the village square which is surrounded by several small Hindu temples. Around the centre there are several classic Newari mansions with intricately carved wooden pillars and window frames. One of the most popular activities for those staying in town is the sunrise hike to the viewpoint at Kali Shrine, an uphill walk of around 1 hour with the reward of Everest views on a clear morning.
