Lashio has long been a popular trading stop on the Burma Road - a busy, British-built, commercial route from Mandalay up to China's Southwest Yunnan Province. Today, the city continues to be a hub for Chinese-Myanmar commerce, and also serves as the administrative capital of Northern Shan. Despite this uninspiring description, Lashio remains an interesting visit and has a number of local sights, including a lively night market, the 250-year old golden Mansu Paya, and the 2,500-year old (or so named) Thatana Paya. Lashio has a couple of reasonable medium-range guesthouses - a welcome stop for those travelling the overland route between Yunnan and Mandalay - and an established airport with flights to Yangon, Mandalay, and Tachileik.
