Kirishima National Park
Kirishima is a National Park in the southern part of Kyushu made up of mountains, volcanic lakes and hot springs and is well known for its network of trails offering enjoyable hiking during the spring, summer and autumn months. Kirishima Onsen is the most developed town in the area and on a clear day it has superb views of Kagoshima and Sakurajima volcano. On really good days it’s said one can sight South Korea from the National Park’s highest mountain, Mount Karakunidake which forms part of the Kirishima ride trail, a scenic six-hour trek. The National Park is home to a variety of wildlife such as deer and there are superb bird watching opportunities around Lake Mi-ike.
Kirishima can be visited as a day trip from Kagoshima, but avid hikers should consider overnighting in the National Park to truly enjoy a volcanic wilderness little visited by other tourists.
