Kaili & Rongjiang - Guizhou Province
Rongjiang County is found in Guizhou province, in the Miao-Dong Autonomous Prefecture of Qiandongnan, of which Kaili is the largest city and the capital. This is one of the most ethnically diverse regions in China, with over 85% of the inhabitants belonging to a minority ethnic group, such as the Miao, Dong, Shui, or Yao. The Miao are the largest minority group, and are famous for their elaborate embroidery and jewellery. Neither Kaili City nor Rongjiang Town are very characterful in themselves, but they are both great jumping off points for exploring the wider area. From here you can access traditional villages such as the Miao villages of Xijiang, Langde, and Matang. Don’t miss the traditional markets, held at various villages across the region on different days. There are also a number of unique ethnic minority festivals which take place throughout the year, such as the Sister’s Meal Festival and the Miao New Year.
