The small town of Trongsa can be found right in the heart of Bhutan. Its central location, surrounded by mountains, and set at the top of the gorge, has given it an unrivalled strategic position. It is little wonder then that one of the country's most important dzongs can be found at Trongsa. Over the years this dzong was considered of such importance that no prince could become king without first holding a position as head of the Trongsa Dzong. Today the power base has shifted to Thimphu but Trongsa is still regarded as a vital dzong and there are regular visit by the highest lamas. Apart from its mighty dzong, Trongsa has an excellent museum in the round watch tower that overlooks the dzong. It also offer a good base to stay as you travel across the country and there are several good walks that cross the gorge.
