Located roughly halfway between Medan and Lake Toba, Berastagi is a large town set in the fertile plains of the volcanic Karo Highlands. The town flourished in the Dutch era, as the traders flocked to this lush cool location set 1300m above sea level. Today the city is an important agricultural centre with an interesting fruit and vegetable market, and although the buildings are modern, the setting is enchanting. The two volcanoes overlooking the town, Sibayak and Sinabung, are considered some of the easiest to climb and can be scaled in a day a piece.
