Gili Islands
The traffic-free Gili Islands located off the northwest coast of Lombok are blessed with powdery white sandy beaches and clear warm blue seas rich in marine life. Less than 3km in length, Gili Trawangan is the largest of the three islands and it has developed significantly over the last decade to offer a range of comfortable accommodation spread out across the island. The island is renowned for its vibrant nightlife, with a large selection of restaurants and some very lively bars concentrated in a small area near the pier. One of the main attractions of Gili Trawangan is the diving and snorkelling opportunities in the calm and clear waters surrounding the island which support a dazzling variety of marine life.
Gili Meno is the smallest and quietest of the three islands: stays here are secluded, peaceful affairs and those seeking much in the way of nightlife should definitely look across the water to the busier Gili Trawangan. The pay-off for this a genuine desert island feel - with just 400 inhabitants scattered across a 2km area Meno is the ideal place to indulge your inner Robinson Crusoe. There is a coastal path which winds its way around the island - the 2km stroll can be covered in around 2 hours; otherwise activities are limited to swimming, snorkelling, enjoying a cool drink in a smattering of local cafes and restaurants, or otherwise very little at all.
