A beautifully preserved traditional Chinese town, Dali enjoys a wonderful position sitting at the base of the Jade Green Mountains with the stunning Erhai Lake laid out in front of it. It is home to the Bai people, who are believed to have first settled in the area some 3,000 years ago.

The picturesque setting makes Dali Old Town a great place to stay for a couple of days relaxing and indulging in the local cuisine or cycling around the peaceful countryside. Apart from the town itself, with its cobbled streets and ancient walls, the most famous sight in the region is the Temple of the Three Pagodas with its ancient towers dating back to the 9th Century. Otherwise the nearby Erhai Lake is worth crossing, or circumnavigating, so as to take in the many quaint villages that surround it, with their distinctive Bai architecture and colourful markets, and to get a feel for life in the fishing communities which hug the lake’s shore.
